"Où situer Turner Williams Jr. ? Disons : dans une filiation où l’histoire des cordes, via le folk mais pas que, remonte à Roscoe Holcomb et John Jacob Niles (peu importe qu’ils ne jouent pas exactement des mêmes instruments, voire qu’ils les aient construits eux-mêmes ou pas), avant qu’elle ne soit prolongée par John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, ou enrichie par les effets propres à Sandy Bull, chez qui les Appalaches, l’Inde ou l’esprit de certaines ballades d’influence celte cohabitent sans anicroches avec des structures répétitives, et pourquoi pas bruitistes. De ces derniers, Turner Williams Jr. prolonge le syncrétisme depuis Marseille où il séjourne depuis qu’il a quitté les États-Unis et son Alabama natal. D’ailleurs, son instrument de prédilection, le shahi baaja, est d’origine indienne, ce qui explique pourquoi certains de ses nombreux enregistrements à tirage limité évoquent un Orient fantasmatique. De plus, bien que celui-ci se joue à partir d’une sorte de clavier rétrofuturiste de machine à écrire, ses cordes l’apparentent au dulcimer comme à l’épinette des Vosges, faisant lien entre sa patrie d’origine, le Japon, la France et le Pakistan – entre autres. C’est assez dire combien bourdon et cordes sympathiques, en évoquant également le bulbul tarang une fois électrifié, rappellent Michael Flower, voire le daxophone d’Hans Reichel, ou – surtout – les autoproductions éditées sous forme de cassettes par le duo que formaient autrefois Davey Williams et LaDonna Smith."

English translation :

"Where does Turner Williams Jr. fit ? Let's put it this way: in a lineage where the history of strings, via folk but not only, goes back to Roscoe Holcomb and John Jacob Niles (it doesn't matter if they don't play exactly the same instruments, or if they built them themselves or not), before it was extended by John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, or enriched by Sandy Bull's own effects, with whom the Appalachians, India or the spirit of certain Celtic-influenced ballads cohabit seamlessly with repetitive, and why not noisy, structures. Of the latter, Turner Williams Jr. continues the syncretism from Marseille, where he has lived since leaving the United States and his native Alabama. In fact, his instrument of choice, the shahi baaja, is of Indian origin, which explains why some of his many limited-edition recordings evoke a fantastical Orient. What's more, although the shahi baaja is played from a sort of retro-futuristic typewriter keyboard, its strings are akin to the dulcimer and the Vosges spruce, providing a link between his homeland, Japan, France and Pakistan - among others. The drone and sympathetic strings, reminiscent of the bulbul tarang once electrified, are reminiscent of Michael Flower, Hans Reichel's daxophone or - above all - the self-produced cassettes of the duo Davey Williams and LaDonna Smith."
